Should omnibus bills be banned so politicians are not forced to vote on various unrelated bills all at the same time?

The federal Conservatives’ second omnibus budget bill (Bill C-45) recently passed through the Senate and became law.

A recent survey of Canadians shows that 64% oppose omnibus bills, bills that bundle unrelated bills into one bill, and force politicians to vote on various unrelated bills all at the same time. The Hamilton Spectator and the National Post criticized the federal Conservatives’ most recent omnibus bill, and revealed that the Conservatives lied when they claimed that bill did not contain any changes that were not proposed in the spring 2012 budget.

The federal Liberals proposed a motion to study how omnibus bills could be restricted so that all bills bundled into an omnibus bill would have to be related. The Liberals and other opposition parties were also applauded by the National Post for introducing thousands of amendments to the Conservatives’ omnibus budget bill, to highlight the problem most people believe omnibus bills cost.
